The Anthea Square

Who doesn’t love the sight of beautiful flowers? They’re bright, beautiful and bring so much life into the world. I’m so excited to release Anthea, a crochet flower square pattern that celebrates everything flower-y.

This images shows Anthea, the crochet flower square pattern, laying flat on a white background. In the bottom left corner, a book is sitting diagonally and open to the pages. Faux flowers line the top and left side of the picture. The crochet pattern is made in lavender, dark purple and green.

Crochet Pattern Design Inspiration

I absolutely love flowers. It isn’t an exaggeration to say that any time I end up in a store that has a garden section, I end up bringing home a plant. I love how much life plants and flowers bring into my home. So when Helen of Sunflower Cottage Crochet asked if I’d like to participate in her Bouquet of Flowers CAL, you know it was like I was in Home Depot. There’s no way I could say no!

I tossed around a few ideas of specific flowers before I finally decided that all flowers are beautiful regardless of what their name is and just to design as my heart desired. I am so pleased with the finished design that I can hardly stand it.

I know a lot of crochet flower square patterns can be up there in terms of difficulty or are pretty simple looking. I wanted to find a nice in-between of these and design a square that was both relatively easy to work up and beautiful to look at.

The result is a lovely crochet flower square pattern that has just a touch of open work with bold petals that sit over other rounds to create depth and visual interest.

Despite looking like it has a lot going on, this crochet pattern doesn’t use any special stitches or fancy techniques! All you need to know are the basic stitches (such as single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet and treble crochet), how to work in the round, how to create chain spaces and how to work into them. No specialty techniques required!

If you’re still new to crochet but want to take on a little bit of a challenge to push yourself, the PDF of this pattern will be a huge help to you. Not only is the PDF created in a nice printer format, it also includes step-by-step photo tutorials plus instructions written out in full sentences for an extra bit of help. You’ll have everything you need to create this pattern inside!

This crochet flower square pattern is a part of the Bouquet of Flowers CAL!

The Bouquet of Flowers Afghan CAL (crochet-a-long) is an event hosted by Helen of Sunflower Cottage Crochet. They’ve invited a bunch of lovely designers to design 10 inch x 10 inch squares that will end up being sewn together to create a lovely flower themed afghan (or anything else you can think of!).

The event kicks off February 28th and runs through mid-April 2022. There are 20 crochet flower square patterns in total by many lovely designers and the Anthea square is just one of them. You’ll find a new square as a part of the CAL available each Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Make sure to head over to the Bouquet of Flowers Afghan CAL for all the information you’ll need to join the CAL, if you haven’t already.

Last year, I participated in the Friendship Blanket CAL which was so much fun and was a huge hit! So many lovely blankets were created during the event and it was absolutely amazing to watch them all come together. It was no surprise when Helen announced that she would run another CAL and I couldn’t wait to join!

I think perhaps one of the most loved things about the CAL last year was the bundle. It was so nice to have all of the patterns in one PDF and, let’s be honest here, work at our own pace.

I’m quite a fast crocheter and can get laser focused on a project, so slowing down when creating the squares just wasn’t working for me. I loved them all so much that I just wanted to continue making them.

If you’re taking part in the CAL, I simply cannot recommend the bundle enough. You’ll receive everything you need to follow the CAL in one place without having to check back for updates, you can work at your own pace and you’ll help support the designers who helped make this community event possible.

If you’d like to check out the bundle, make sure to click the button below!

Crochet Flower Square Pattern

SKILL LEVEL

Advanced Beginner
This pattern requires knowledge of the basic, standard stitches such as chain, slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet and treble crochet. There are no advanced stitches that you may not have heard of or used before. You will need to know how to work in closed rounds.

This crochet flower square pattern heavily relies on chain spaces to create the flower petals and texture. You should be comfortable creating chain spaces and crocheting several stitches into them.

This pattern also requires that you know how to place multiple stitches in one stitch.

MATERIALS

3 colors of DK – Light (3) weight acrylic yarn of your choice.

You will need:
Color A: 0.5 oz/ 15g /45 yards.
Color B: 0.7 oz/ 20g /60 yards.
Color C: 0.35 oz/ 10g /30 yards.

Yarn Used
Paintbox Simply DK in Dusty Lilac (CA), Pansy Purple (CB) and Slate Green (CC)

TOOLS

GAUGE

15 double crochet x 9 rows = approximately 4 inches x 4 inches.

Alternatively, you can also measure after completing Round 4. Measure from one tip of petal (chain 2) to the tip of the opposite petal. Your work should measure approximately 3.5 inches at this point.

Note: I am a tight crocheter, so my tension is usually tighter than others.

FINISHED SIZE

Approximately 10 inches x 10 inches, after blocking.

NOTES

  • This square pattern is worked in closed rounds. You will always slip stitch to the first stitch of the round to close.
  • This pattern calls for usage of a magic circle. You can use the magic circle or you can chain 3 and slip stitch to the first chain made to create a circle to work into.
  • Chain 1 and chain 2 at the beginning of a round do not count as stitches. Always place your first stitch of the round in the same stitch you chained out of.
  • Chain 3 at the beginning of the rounds always counts as a double crochet and a chain 1 unless otherwise noted.
  • If you notice your square becoming larger than 10 inches x 10 inches, you can replace the half double crochet stitches in Rounds 9, 13 and 14  with single crochets instead.
  • Stitch counts are referenced at the end of each round in parentheses and bold italics (#)
  • Repeats are listed in brackets [ ].
  • Instructions within braces {…} indicate a repeat within a repeat. […{….}…]
  • Instructions within parenthesis indicate to work all instructions in the same stitch.
  • Round 10 is split into 2 parts for easier reading/understanding. Please finish “Round 10” before beginning “Round 10 Continued”.

SPECIAL NOTES

Special Note – Working in Chain Spaces
This crochet square pattern makes heavy uses of chain spaces. Chain spaces are used throughout this project, including creating the corners of the square and in the tips of the flower petals.

When working in the round and placing multiple stitches into chain spaces, you may need to lightly push your stitches over out of the way to properly fill the space. You may also need to do so when the pattern instructs you to work into the following stitch.

It is very common for the first stitch after a chain space to get hidden under the several stitches placed into the space. Keep an eye out for those as you work through the pattern to make sure your stitch count stays correct.

Special Stitch – Magic Circle
This crochet flower square pattern is written to use a magic circle.  You can use the magic circle or you can chain 3 and slip stitch to the first chain made to create a circle to work into. Your choice!

You can view my photo and video tutorial for the Magic Circle if you need it!

“Petals” Definition
This pattern creates two rounds of “petals”. These petals are created by working multiple stitches and a chain space into a specified chain space. When the pattern references petals, this is what it is referring to. For example, a petal in Round 4 is made by working 1 hdc, 2 dc, a chain 2, 2 dc and 1 hdc all in the same space. In Round 7, a petal is made by working 5 dc, 1 tr, a chain 2, 1 tr and 5 dc all in the same space.

HOW TO READ THIS PATTERN

  • In Rounds 11 and 12 of this pattern, there will be a repeat within a repeat. Throughout this pattern, you will see the repeats listed in brackets →  [Repeat Instructions]. For the rounds that have a repeat within a repeat, you will see the full repeat in brackets and the inner repeat within braces ( {…} ) → [ Repeat Instructions {Inner repeat instructions}…]
  • These instructions tell you that you will [repeat everything within the brackets a specific amount of times] and {repeat everything within braces within the bracketed repeat as instructed}.
  • Instructions within parenthesis indicate to work all instructions into the same space. So, for example: (2 hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc). This set of instructions states to work 2 half double crochets, chain 2 and 2 more half double crochets  all within the same indicated space.

Crochet Flower Square Pattern

Round 1 – With CA: In magic circle, ch 2 (doesn’t count here and throughout) and place 12 dc. Sl st to first dc to close. Pull magic circle tail tight. (12)

Round 2 – Ch 1 (doesn’t count here and throughout), in each st around, place 2 sc. Sl st to first sc to close. (24)

Round 3 – Ch 1, place 1 sc next 2 sts. [Ch 3, 1 sc next 3 sts]. Repeat 7x. 1 st remains. Ch 3, 1 sc last st. Sl st to first sc to close. (24 sts, 8 ch 3 spcs)

Round 4 – Ch 1, 1 sc same st, sk 1 st. In ch 3 spc, place (1 hdc, 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc, 1 hdc), [sk 1 st, 1 sc next, sk 1 st. In ch 3 spc, place (1 hdc, 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc, 1 hdc)]. Repeat inside brackets 7x. Sk last st, sl st to first sc to close. (56 sts, 8 ch 2 spc, 8 “petals”)

Trim CA, weave ends. Join CB in any sc from Round 4.

Round 5 – Ch 3 (counts as dc and ch 1 here and throughout unless otherwise noted), dc same st. Ch 4, sk 6 sts and ch 2 spc (Round 4 petal), [place (1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc) in sc. Ch 4, sk 6 sts and ch 2 spc (petal)] Repeat inside brackets 7x. Sl st around starting ch 3 to close. (16 dc, 8 ch 1 spc, 8 ch 4 spcs)

*When working Round 5, it’s easier to simply “ignore” the petals of the flower and let them sit where they like. We fix this after completing Round 5.

At the end of Round 5, pull the petals created in Round 4 forward so they are sitting on top of your Chain 4 spaces. Your petals should not be behind the chain spaces.

This image shows how you will pull the petals through the chain spaces after completing Round 5.

Round 6 – Ch 1, [In ch 1 spc, place (1 sc, ch 5, 1 sc). Sk dc. In ch 4 spc, place 2 sc. Place 1 sc through both the ch 2 spc of Round 4 petal AND around ch 4 of Round 5. In same ch 4 space, place 2 more sc. Sk dc] Repeat inside brackets 8x. Sl st to first sc to close. (56 sc, 8 ch 5 spcs)

*In this round, we are securing the petals from Round 4. In each of the ch 4 spaces, we are working 2 sc as normal into the ch 4 space. Then, we place our hook through both the ch 2 space of the petal from Round 4 and around the ch 4 space of Round 5 to hold the flower petal down. Finally, we place 2 more single crochet in the same ch 4 space.

This image shows how to secure the petals as instructed in Round 6.
This image shows the petal secured.

Round 7 – Sl st into ch 5 spc. Ch 2, [In ch 5 spc, place (5 dc, 1 tr, ch 2, 1 tr, 5 dc), sk 3 sts, 1 sc next st, sk 3 sts]. Repeat inside brackets 8x. Sl st to first dc to close. (104 sts, 8 ch 2 spcs)

Sk 2 sts, 1 dc next 2 sts, 1 hdc next st, 1 sc next st, 1 sc in ch 2 spc, ch 2]. Repeat inside brackets 4x. Sl st to first sc to close. Pull the 4 loose petals forward. (56 sts, 4 ch 5 spcs, 4 ch 2 spcs (corners), 8 ch 1 spcs)

Round 9 – Ch 1, [place 1 hdc in each st and ch 1 spc to ch 5 spc. Place 5 hdc in ch 5 spc (working behind and ignoring Round 7 petal). Place 1 hdc in each st and ch 1 spc to corner ch 2. In Ch 2 spc, place (2 hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc)]. Repeat inside brackets 4x to end. Sl st to first hdc to close. (100 sts total, 25 sts each side, 4 ch 2 spcs)
