Rising Star Baby Blanket

This light weight and gorgeous crochet star baby blanket is a lovely gift for any expecting mother. The Rising Star Crochet baby blanket is a gorgeous take on the 12 point star crochet blankets. Using any color pallet you like, this free crochet baby blanket pattern is perfect for anyone creating a blanket for a little one looking to enter the world.

This pattern was updated in 2021. You may have come here from a Pinterest Pin of a white, pink and purple blanket. This is the updated pattern. Thank you!

This image shows the crochet star baby blanket laying flat, at an angle, to show all of the peaks and valleys created while crocheting.

Crochet Star Baby Blanket

There is something so lovely about a crochet star baby blanket – especially when it has 12 points! This type of blanket may look intimidating for those who haven’t worked one yet, but not to worry – it’s easier than you think!

The first few rounds are “set up” rounds, so you’ll start creating the lovely chain spaces that create the points. After that, it is essentially a repeat of rounds except you’ll continue increasing so the blanket ends up flat. You’ve got this!

If you’d like a PDF of this pattern, which includes a picture tutorial, full definition of stitch counts and step by step for the first 6 rounds written out (not in short hand abbreviations), you can grab one on either my Ravelry or my Etsy shop by clicking the buttons below.

If you haven’t worked a star baby blanket before, I would highly recommend this PDF as it offers a lot of additional help that you may need.

SKILL LEVEL

Intermediate. Crocheters looking to follow this crochet star baby blanket should know how to:

  • Read a crochet pattern – There is NOT a video tutorial for this easy crochet blanket pattern.
  • Work the basic stitches – Chain, slip stitch, single crochet, and double crochet.
  • Understand how to work in the round as well as closing rounds.
  • Be comfortable with placing several stitches into the same stitch or a chain space.
  • Be familiar with counting chain 2’s as a double crochet and slip stitching into the second chain of the chain 2 to close a round.
  • Understand how to skip stitches.

This is NOT a beginner or absolute beginner pattern. This is an INTERMEDIATE pattern. Absolute Beginners will absolutely find this pattern out of their skill level. Advanced beginners may be able to work through the pattern, depending on their understanding of these techniques. The pattern was tested by an Advanced Beginner who had no issues.

If you are unfamiliar with any of these techniques or aren’t familiar with reading patterns, I highly recommend the PDF as it will walk you through everything step by step.

MATERIALS

DK (Light – 3) weight yarn of your choice. You will need 3 colors.

Yarn usage is  approximately:

Color A: 272 yards / 3.2 ounces
Color B: 370 yards / 4 ounces
Color C: 323 yards / 3.8 ounces

Yarn Used:  Yarn Bee Baby Bee yarn which is very soft and lovely.

Colors are referenced as Color A, Color B and Color C.

You can use almost any yarn you like. The usage will be different, but there’s nothing stopping you from using a different DK yarn or a Medium (4). Using a heavier weight of yarn will change the size of the blanket to be bigger than stated and you will use more yarn.

TOOLS

4 mm Hook – Check out my favorite crochet hooks!
Stitch markers
Scissors
Tapestry Needle

GAUGE

20 double crochet x 11 rows is approximately 4” by 4”.

FINISHED SIZE

Approximately 34 inches in diameter. You can change of this crochet star baby blanket the size by removing/adding rounds.

PATTERN NOTES

  • Chain 2 at the start of a round always counts as a double crochet.
  • Chain 3 at start of round counts as 1 dc + ch 1.
  • To close each round, slip stitch to the starting chain 2 chain to close. It’s best if you slip stitch into the top of the chain 2 (second chain). You can slip stitch around the chains, but it can create a small gap at the seam.
  • Pattern uses a Magic Circle to begin. If you prefer to start with the chaining method, you are welcome to.
  • The stitch count is broken down for easier counting and is explained in depth on the next page.
  • “1 dc next 4 sts” means to place 1 double crochet in EACH of the next 4 stitches.

HOW TO READ STITCH COUNT

This crochet star baby blanket pattern includes a detailed stitch count that will help you to count your stitches in later rounds.

In later rounds the stitch counts get into the hundreds and therefore can be difficult or tedious to count. Stitch counts are broken down for ease of counting.

For example, on Round 24 you will see: “(360 dc, 12 ch 2 spcs, 15 dc each slope)”.

This means: You will have a TOTAL of 360 double crochet. You will also have a total of 12 chain 2 spaces. There are 15 double crochet on each slope.

WHAT IS THE SLOPE?

Infographic of this crochet star baby blanket pattern, explaining what the slope means in the stitch count of this pattern.

A “Slope” is any area of solid double crochet. These are between a chain 2 space and where we skip 2 stitches or vice versa.

Example: “12 dc each slope” means you will have 12 dc between each ch 2 space and skip 2 space. This makes it easier to count your stitches after your round is complete.

ABBREVIATIONS

  • Ch – Chain
  • Sl st – Slip stitch
  • Sc – Single crochet
  • Dc – Double crochet
  • St(s) – Stitch(es)
  • Spc – Space
  • Sk – Skip (sk 1 = skip 1 stitch)
  • (…) – Instructions within parenthesis indicate to work all stitches in the same stitch or space.
  • […] – Repeats are listed in brackets
  • (…) – Stitch counts are listed at the end of round in parentheses and bold italics.

SPECIAL TECHNIQUE – MAGIC CIRCLE

This crochet star baby blanket pattern is written to use a magic circle.  You can use the magic circle or you can chain 4 and slip stitch to the first chain made to create a circle to work into. Your choice!

If you’d like to learn how to create a magic circle, you can find my photo and video tutorial here: https://theloopholefox.com/magic-circle-how-to-video-tutorial/

SPECIAL NOTE – STITCH PLACEMENT

Accidentally skipping a stitch that should be worked into is easy to do when working this crochet star baby blanket pattern.

When we place several stitches into a chain 2 space (example: 2 double crochet, chain 2 and 2 more double crochet), these stitches can cover the top of the NEXT stitch. It’s common to accidentally skip this stitch, not realizing that the stitch is there.

This image visually shows what is explained via text in making sure you don't accidentally skip a stitch.

What you can do is push the stitches in the chain 2 space to the side (it won’t hurt anything) so that you can see where the next stitch is.

In the image above, the top picture has the next stitch highlighted and you can see how it’s partially covered by the stitches in the chain 2 space. A black arrow points downward do it. A pink arrow points to the right toward a curved line. This indicates that we can push the stitches to the right to get them out of the way to see the stitch. If you’re left handed, you’ll push them to the left.

The bottom picture in the image above shows these stitches pushed out of the way and the stitch is much clearer to see. Once again, the top of the stitch is highlighted yellow and a black arrow points downward to it.

This image shows the star crochet baby blanket pattern sample laid flat on a wooden background. The photo is cropped so only one half of the diameter of the blanket shows, coming in from the right side.

How to Make This Crochet Star Baby Blanket

With Color A, create a Magic Circle (click here for tutorial).

Round 1 – In Magic Circle, ch 2 (counts as a dc here and throughout) and place 11 dc. Pull tail to tighten, sl st to 2nd ch of ch 2 to close. (12)

Round 2 – Ch 2, 1 dc in same st, 2 dc in each st around, sl st to 2nd ch of ch 2 to close. (24)

Round 3 – Ch 3 (counts as dc + ch 1), 1 dc same st. [sk 1 st, (1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc) in next st]. Repeat around until 1 st remains. Sk remaining st, Sl st to 2nd ch of ch 3 to close. (24 dc, 12 ch 1 spcs)

Round 4 – Sl st into ch 1 spc. Ch 2, (1 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same ch 1 spc. [Sk 2 sts, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch 1 spc. Repeat inside brackets until 1 st and sl st that started round remain. Sk these 2 sts and sl st to 2nd ch of ch 2 to close.  (48 dc, 12 ch 2 spcs)

Round 5 – Sl st into next st, ch 2. (2 dc, ch 2, dc) in ch 2 spc, 1 dc next st. [Sk 2 sts, 1 dc next st. (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch 2 spc, 1 dc next st]. Repeat inside brackets until 1 st and sl st that started round remain. Sk these 2 sts and sl st to 2nd ch of ch 2 to close. (72 dc, 12 ch 2 spcs, 3 dc each slope)

Note: The sl st’s that close the round don’t count as a stitch at all. You will see this sl st to close at the end of each round moving forward, between the last stitch and the sl st that started the round (“Sl st into next st”). Make sure to ignore this sl st in the middle as it is a closing stitch, not a stitch we work into. See photo for visual reference.

This image visually shows what was explained via text about the slip stitch to close.

In the image above, the rightmost black dot indicates the last stitch of the round. The leftmost black dot indicates the slip stitch that started the round. A pink arrow points to a tiny slip stitch between them, which is the slip stitch that closed the previous round and is NOT a stitch, so ignore it completely.

Change to Color B in the last st of Round 5.

Round 6 – Sl st into next st, ch 2. 1 dc next st, (1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc) in ch 2 spc. 1 dc next 2 sts. [Sk 2 sts, 1 dc next 2 sts, (1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc) in ch 2 spc, 1 dc next 2 sts]. Repeat inside brackets until 1 st and the sl st that started round remain. Sk these 2 sts and sl st to 2nd ch of ch 2 to close. (72 dc, 12 ch 2 spcs, 3 dc each slope)

Round 7 – Sl st into next st, ch 2. 1 dc next st, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch 2 spc. 1 dc next 2 sts. [Sk 2 sts, 1 dc next 2 sts, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch 2 spc, 1 dc next 2 sts]. Repeat inside brackets until 1 st and the sl st that started round remain. Sk these 2 sts and sl st to 2nd ch of ch 2 to close. (96 dc, 12 ch 2 spcs, 4 dc each slope)

Round 8 – Sl st into next st, ch 2. 1 dc next 2 sts, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch 2 spc. 1 dc next 3 sts. [Sk 2 sts, 1 dc next 3 sts, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch 2 spc. 1 dc next 3 sts]. Repeat inside brackets until 1 st and the sl st that started round remain. Sk these 2 sts and sl st to 2nd ch of ch 2 to close. (120 dc, 12 ch 2 spcs, 5 dc each slope)

Round 9 – Sl st into next st, ch 2. 1 dc next 3 sts, (1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc) in ch 2 spc. 1 dc next 4 sts. [Sk 2 sts, 1 dc 4 sts, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch 2 spc, 1 dc 4 sts]. Repeat inside brackets until 1 st and the sl st that started round remain. Sk these 2 sts and sl st to 2nd ch of ch 2 to close. (120 dc, 12 ch 2 spcs, 5 dc each slope)
