  • FLO – Front Loop Only
  • 3LO – Third Loop Only

  • WS – Wrong Side

NOTES

  • Chain 1 at start of row does not count as a stitch.
  • The pattern does not require a specific stitch multiple. It does require an ODD stitch count (start with an even chain count).
  • The blanket is worked lengthwise so that our texture is vertical. This means our starting chains will be the length of the blanket and each row adds width to the blanket.
  • You can easily alter the size of the blanket. Please see the “Changing Size” note.
  • If you are unfamiliar with the 3 loops of half double crochet (Back Loop, Front Loop and 3rd Loop), it is recommended to practice these techniques before starting the blanket.

How to Read this Easy Crochet Blanket Pattern

All 4 sizes for this pattern are on one set of instructions.

The starting chains, row repeats and stitch counts will all be listed in order of size from smallest to biggest. Instructions for sizes bigger than Baby Blanket size are shown in parenthesis (…) and in order of size:
Baby Blanket (Child Throw, Medium Throw, Large Throw).

For example: “Ch 102 (190, 210, 252)”. You will chain: 102 for a Baby Blanket (190 for a Child Size Throw, 210 for a Medium Sized Adult Throw, 252 for a Large Sized Adult Throw).

How to Change the Size of this Easy Crochet Blanket Pattern

You can easily change the size of this blanket.

Change the length of the blanket by adding more or less chains to your starting chains. Add or remove approximately 3.5 chains per inch to your starting chains. Make sure your starting chains are an even number so your stitch count is odd, as required.

You don’t have to worry about where to add or remove these stitches from. The pattern is written to include all sizes. Follow the pattern as written.

Change the width of the blanket by repeating the specified repeat rows more or less times. If you want a wider blanket, repeat the rows more. If you want a blanket that is less wide, repeat the rows less.

Make sure to end on the same row the repeat ends on (Row 9) to end the blanket properly and to move on to your final row.

Special Stitch Techniques: Half Double Crochet in BLO, FLO and 3LO

Half double crochet stitches have 3 loops, each of which can be worked into independently to create different textures. They can also be worked “normally”, as we would place a half double crochet without a special technique. All of these techniques are used in this blanket pattern.

This image shows the 3 loops of a half double crochet with color coded highlights, as explained in the text.

In the image above, the Back Loops (toward the left) are highlighted yellow. The Front Loops are highlighted pink. The 3rd Loops (toward the right) are highlighted light orange.

“Normal” Half Double Crochet:

When working a “normal” half double crochet, we place our stitch under both loops that create the top of a stitch. This means you will insert your hook into both the Front and Back loop of the stitch. This is how we “normally” work stitches.

Special Technique – Back Loop Only (BLO)

When working a stitch into the Back Loop Only (BLO), we will insert our hook only into the Back Loop. This loop is the furthest loop away from us.

Special Technique – Front Loop Only (FLO)

When working a stitch into the Front Loop Only (FLO), we will insert our hook only into the Front Loop. This loop is at the top of the stitch and closer to us.

Special Technique – 3rd Loop Only (3LO)

When working a stitch into the 3rd Loop Only (3LO), we will insert our hook only into the 3rd Loop. This loop is flat against the post of the stitch and sits diagonally just below the front loop.

Do not cut yarn. Continue with the border.

This image is a close up of the edging and border of this crochet blanket.

Border

The border is made up of 1 round of single crochets to “clean” up the edges and finish the blanket. However, it is optional. You can omit the border if you like how the edges of the blanket look or add more rounds if you’d like.

Round 1 (RS) – Ch 1, turn. 1 sc each st across to end of row. Ch 1, rotate to work down the first raw edge. Place 1 sc in the side of first row, 2 sc in side of next row. [1 sc in the side of next row, 2 sc in the side of next row]. Repeat inside brackets down the edge.

Ch 1 and rotate to work along the bottom of chs. Place 1 sc in the bottom of each ch across to end of chs. Ch 1 and rotate to work along the final raw edge.  Place 2 sc in the side of first row, 1 sc in side of next row. [ 2 sc in the side of next row, 1 sc in the side of next row ]. Repeat inside brackets up the edge.

Finally, ch 1 and sl st to first sc made in round to close. (400, (660, 760, 916))

Tie off, cut yarn and weave ends. You’re done!

*If your stitch count doesn’t match for the border, that’s okay. As long as your blanket lays flat and doesn’t pull or warp your blanket, your stitch count doesn’t matter.

**If you have never put a border on a blanket before, it may be confusing where to place your stitches. You can review my in depth tutorials for placing a border on half double crochet and single crochet stitches for additional help.

Is this free crochet blanket pattern easy?

Depending on your skill level: Yes.

If you’ve been crocheting for a while, know your basic stitches (single crochet and half double crochet), feel confident working in rows and understand how to work in the Back Loop Only, Front Loop Only and 3rd Loop Only, then this blanket should be a breeze for you.

However, if you’re still in the absolute beginner skill level and you’ve only just picked up some yarn and a hook, and learned some of the basic stitches… no. This pattern won’t be super easy for you and may be something you want to put on the back burner until you’re more confident.

While this pattern uses mainly half double crochet, we do utilize all the different loops of the stitch to create interesting texture and ribbing. These techniques may be things you aren’t familiar with yet and will want to practice before you take on a big project.

The Daydreamer Blanket PDF Pattern comes with a step by step photo tutorial, so make sure to purchase the PDF and utilize the photo tutorials if needed.

What yarn should I use to make this Easy Crochet Blanket Pattern?

This easy crochet blanket pattern uses Lion Brand’s Pound of Love yarn, which is a Medium (4) weight 100% acrylic yarn. While the listing says it is “worsted” weight, this yarn feels thicker than most worsted yarns and is closer to an Aran. If you substitute yarn, look for a thicker Medium (4).

The fiber you choose is completely up to you. You can use acrylic, wool or a blend of the two. These will be the easiest to substitute yarn for.

I wouldn’t recommend cotton yarn as it’s significantly thinner than acrylic or wool and will significantly throw off the yarn usage.
