June’s Baby Blanket

June’s Baby Blanket is a beautiful crochet ripple baby blanket pattern with 12 points. It may also be referred to as a star blanket. This light weight beauty features a light weight feel, 12 beautiful points, and a lovely ripple of color throughout. Using any color pallet you like, this free crochet baby blanket pattern is perfect for anyone creating a blanket for a little one looking to enter the world.

Crochet Ripple Baby Blanket

This crochet baby blanket was named “June” as it was created for a June baby. My best friend reached out to me and asked me to create a baby blanket for a friend’s new addition that would arrive “in June”. Well, considering I am a June baby and I was making this crochet ripple baby blanket for a June baby, I figured it had to be named June.

Using a light weight yarn (DK), this baby blanket works up quickly and is beautifully soft.

SKILL LEVEL

Intermediate (although tested by a beginner, so beginners certainly CAN make this blanket if they want to).

MATERIALS

You can use any light (3) weight yarn you prefer in 3 colors.

You can, of course, use a medium (4) weight or higher, but it will create a larger blanket and the yarn usage will be different.

This baby blanket is created with three separate colors. You can alter these as necessary to create a gender specific baby blanket or to match the mothers nursery.

You will need three colors for this blanket. With light (3) yarn, you will need:

Color A: Approximately 272 yards or 3.2 oz.
Color B: Approximately 370 yards or 4 oz
Color C: Approximately 323 yards or 3.8 oz.

I used Yarn Bee’s Baby Bee Sweet Delight in colorways Angel (White, CA), Pink-A-Boo (Pink, CB) and Sugarplum (Purple, CC)

NOTES

  • This pattern is written in US terms.
  • Chain 1 and Chain 2 to begin rows never count as a stitch. You will ALWAYS place your first stitch in the chain you chained out of.
  • Pattern calls for the use of a magic circle to begin. If you prefer to start with the chaining method, you are welcome to. Chain 4, slip stitch to first chain made and work into that circle for R1.
  • Placing several stitches into a chain 2 space is considered the “peak” or tip of the ripple and crocheting 3 stitches together counts as the “valley” or inner point of the ripple.

ABBREVIATIONS

  • Mc – magic circle
  • Sc – single crochet
  • Dc – double crochet
  • Ch – chain
  • Sl st – slip stitch
  • St – stitch
  • CA – Color A
  • CB – Color B
  • CC – Color C
  • Spc(s) – Space(s)
  • Sk – skip (sk 1 = skip 1 stitch)
  • SPECIAL STITCHES
    • sc3tog – single crochet 3 together
    • hdc2tog – half double crochet 2 together
    • hdc3tog – half double crochet 3 together

SPECIAL STITCHES

Sc3tog – Single crochet 3 together. To sc3tog, [insert hook into next stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop]. Repeat inside brackets two more times. You should have 4 loops on hook. Yarn over, pull through all 4.

hdc2tog – Half double crochet 2 together. To hdc2tog, [yarn over, insert hook into next stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop]. Repeat inside brackets one more times. You should have 5 loops on hook. Yarn over, pull through all 5.

hdc3tog – Half double crochet 3 together. To hdc3tog, [yarn over, insert hook into next stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop]. Repeat inside brackets two more times. You should have 7 loops on hook. Yarn over, pull through all 7.

To help you understand this written pattern, I am including an example to explain instructions.

In this pattern, you will see directions within brackets […] The directions inside the brackets are what you will repeat around. Sometimes you might see parentheses inside of these brackets [….(…).]. In this case, you will complete the directions inside the parentheses all in one stitch.

EXAMPLE:

[1 dc 6 sts (2 dc, ch 2, 2dc in ch 2 spc) 1 dc 6 sts, hdc3tog]  – This means that you will [Place 1 dc in the next 6 stitches (place 2 dc in chain 2 space, ch 2, place 2 additional dc in same ch 2 spc) Place 1 dc in the next 6 stitches, half double crochet 3 together].

How to Make This Crochet Ripple Baby Blanket

With CA,

Round 1 – In mc, ch 2 (does not count as a dc here or throughout) and place 12 dc. Pull tight, sl st to the first dc to close. (12)

Round 2 – Ch 2, place 2 dc in each st around. Sl st to first dc to close. (24)

Round 3 – Ch 3 (counts as dc + ch 1), dc same st. [sk 1 st, (dc, ch 1, dc) next st]. Repeat inside brackets 11x until 1 st remains. Sk the st and sl st around the ch 3 that started the round. (12 “V” stitches – 24 dc, 12 ch 1 spcs)

*Slip stitching around the ch 3 closes the round and effectively puts us in the chain 1 space to begin Round 4.

Round 4 – Sl st into ch 1 spc. Ch 2, [(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch 1 spc, sk 2 sts]. Repeat inside brackets 12x to end of round. Sl st to top of first st to close. (48 sts, 12 ch 2 spcs)

Round 5 – Sl st in next st. Ch 2, [1 dc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch 1 spc, 1 dc, hdc2tog]. Repeat inside brackets 12x to end. Sl st to top of first sto to close. (84 sts, 12 ch 2 spcs)

Cut CA and leave enough tail for weaving in ends. Join CB in any stitch 2 stitches directly before a chain 2 spc.

Round 6 – With newly joined yarn, ch 2. [1 dc next 2 sts, (1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc in ch 2 spc), 1 dc next 2 sts, hdc3tog]. Repeat inside brackets 12x. Sl st to first dc to close. (84 sts, 12 ch 2 spcs)
