Nova Baskets (4 Sizes!)
Organize your home with the Nova Crochet Basket Pattern. With 4 sizes to choose from, you can easily organize any room in your home with style.
Designed with dense, textured stitches and evenly spaced rounds of single crochet and slip stitches for stability, this crochet basket pattern is a stunning addition to your home organization.
Designed for two colors but just as gorgeous in one, the Nova Crochet Basket Pattern features the Trinity Stitch which provides absolutely stunning texture.
To keep the baskets made from this crochet basket pattern strong without the need to purchase and cut plastic mesh or work an interior piece, we evenly work “structure” rounds of single crochet and slip stitches through the body of the basket.
Don’t worry, though, these rounds that help provide structural integrity add to the style of the basket, which you can see in the chainlike texture evenly spaced in the samples in the image above.
Of course, as with all crocheted baskets, they aren’t perfectly solid like a plastic basket would be but because of a tighter tension and these structural rounds, the basket stands up on it’s own without caving in.
This crochet basket pattern includes 4 different sizes: Mini, Small, Medium and Large. The Medium and Large sizes are designed to have handles but you can certainly leave them off if you prefer.
The large size is big enough that it could be considered a bag or even be used as a crochet project bag.
The Nova Baskets match with my Nova Preemie Baby Blanket pattern, too! While the two patterns aren’t exactly the same, the end result produces very similar texture.

The best yarn for the Nova Crochet Basket Pattern
When you’re crocheting a basket, you’ll want to look for yarn that is very strong. This typically means you’ll want to use a cotton or cotton blend yarn, but you can use other fibers. The basket may be a little more flimsy, though.
I used Yarnspirations Bernat Maker (previously known as “Home Dec”) which is a very strong yarn. It’s essentially a tube of woven fabric with a rope of fiber inside of the tube. This makes Bernat Maker a fantastic choice for crochet baskets and is the yarn I highly recommend for this crochet basket pattern.
Plus, the stitch definition is next to none. The texture of these crochet baskets really shines with Bernat Maker.
You can use other yarn, if you prefer. You can even use a Medium (4) cotton yarn and hold two strands together for this pattern, though this crochet basket pattern was not designed with this technique and therefore I cannot tell you how much yarn you will need.

Nova Crochet Basket Pattern Construction
The construction of this crochet basket pattern is fairly straightforward. We will create a flat circle in which we increase each round that is the base (or bottom of the basket) up to our desired size.
Then, we transition to working in rounds that are not increased. This creates the sides that go straight up and make it a basket shape.
The flat circle base is made of only single crochet stitches. The sides are made using the Trinity Stitch, slightly modified to work in turned rounds.
To help stabilize the sides of the basket and stop them from caving in, we will work 1 round of single crochet stitches and then 1 round of slip stitches evenly spaced throughout the basket. This significantly improves the structure.
You can skip the slip stitch round if you want to but you will end up with rounds of single crochet which will break up the texture. The slip stitches not only add extra strength and structure but also add pretty style to the project.
These slip stitches will not be worked into in the next round and we will instead work “2 rounds below” into the single crochet stitches. By not working into them, we ensure the sides of our basket continue to go straight up instead of bowing in or out and they provide a pretty, chainlike texture.
Make sure to read the “Ignoring Slip Stitches & Working 2 Rounds Below” note in the crochet basket pattern instructions.
Where to get the Nova Crochet Basket Pattern
The Nova Baskets are a free crochet basket pattern in this blog post. Scroll down to view the free version which includes all 4 sizes.
However, if you’d like a more robust pattern with photo tutorials, the steps for the photo tutorial written out in full sentences and a printer friendly version of the PDF, I recommend you purchase the PDF pattern.
With the PDF pattern, you will receive photo tutorials for the special stitches and techniques as well as a detailed photo tutorial for Rounds 1 through 8 of the “Body of the Basket” and through the handles for Medium and Large sizes which will set you up to work this crochet basket pattern with confidence. The photos include details with arrows and dots to help identify all the stitches and their placement.
SKILL LEVEL
INTERMEDIATE. Crocheters looking to follow this pattern should know how to:
- Read a crochet pattern – There is NOT a video tutorial for this crochet basket pattern.
- Work the basic stitches – Chain, slip stitch, single crochet
- How to work in the Back Loop Only (BLO)
- How to work in closed and turned rounds
- How to crochet a flat circle, increasing each round
- How to single crochet 3 together and single crochet 2 together (sc3tog/sc3tog) or be willing to learn.
- How to place a stitch “in the previous stitch” or be willing to learn.
- Prior knowledge of how to work the Trinity Stitch will be helpful but is not required.
This is NOT a beginner pattern! Absolute Beginners will find this pattern way outside of their skill level. Advanced Beginners will likely also find this to be outside of their skill level but can push through if they are willing to learn and try new techniques they haven’t come across yet.
If you are unfamiliar with any of these techniques or aren’t familiar with reading patterns, I highly recommend the PDF pattern as it will walk you through everything step by step.
MATERIALS
Bulky (5) weight yarn of your choice in 2 colors. A cotton or cotton blend yarn will work best.
You will need approximately:
Mini Color A: 30 g, 1.1 oz, 38 yds
Mini Color B: 20 g, 0.75 oz, 26 yds
Small Color A: 50 g, 1.76 oz, 64 yds
Small Color B: 45 g, 1.6 oz, 57 yds
Medium Color A: 115 g, 4.1 oz, 145 yds
Medium Color B: 85 g, 3 oz, 108 yds
Large Color A: 140 g, 4.95 oz, 178 yds
Large Color B: 130 g, 4.6 oz, 165 yds
Yarn Used
Yarnspirations Bernat Maker (previously known as “Home Dec”) in colorways Jam (Color A) and Cream (Color B). This yarn is 72% cotton, 28% nylon. 8.8 oz, 250g, 317 yds per skein.
Purchasing one skein of both Color A and Color B will give you enough to make a few baskets from this crochet basket pattern, depending on the sizes you choose. As you can see in the yarn requirements, all of these baskets take less than 1 skein.
TOOLS & NOTIONS
6 mm (J-10) Hook

GAUGE
Check gauge after Round 6. Your circle should be approximately 4 inches in diameter. Gauge is not extremely important.
Note: I am a tight crocheter, so my tension is usually tighter than others. Learn more about gauge and what this means here. As long as you’re in the approximate range of gauge, you should be fine.

Trinity Stitch – Tutorial Link
This pattern uses the Trinity Stitch which uses sc3tog and chain 1’s to create pretty clusters. I have an in depth, step by step photo tutorial for this stitch that shows you how to work the stitch and how and why it works.
I highly recommend reviewing my Trinity Stitch Photo Tutorial if you are unfamiliar with the Trinity Stitch, sc3tog, starting in the previous stitch or working into chain 1’s when they count as a stitch.
Note: The Trinity Stitch has been slightly modified in this pattern to alternately start and end on a sc2tog so that it works in closed and turned rounds.
PATTERN NOTES
- Please read all notes, including special notes, before starting this pattern.
- Chain 1 at the beginning of the round to turn never counts as a stitch. Always place your first stitch in the first stitch.
- Chain 1’s in the round instructions (after each sc3tog or sc2tog) COUNT as a stitch. The stitch count will include these and you will work into them as a “normal” stitch.
- Slip stitches to close rounds do NOT count as stitches. Ignore the slip stitches and make sure to work into the first stitch of the round (sc or sc2tog), not the slip stitch. Check out my Does the Slip Stitch Count Photo Tutorial for visuals.
- “1 sc 5 sts” means place 1 sc into each of the next 5 sts.
- “2 sc next st” means place 2 sc into the next st.
TAKE BREAKS!
We are working with bulky yarn and a smaller hook which can cause wrist fatigue but this tighter tension is necessary for the structure of the basket. Make sure you take breaks, especially in the larger sizes, to care for your most important tool… you!
Ignoring Slip Stitches & Working 2 Rounds Below
In Round 3 of “Body of the Basket” and Round 2 of “Handle” portions of this pattern, there will be rounds in which the instructions tell us to: “Ignore the slip stitches from the last round and work into the top of the single crochet stitches 2 rounds below”.
This means we will completely ignore the slip stitches from the round we just worked and work into the single crochets from 2 rounds below instead.
“1 round below” is the slip stitch round (Round 2 or Round 8 in Body of Basket) and “2 rounds below” is the single crochet round (Round 1 and Round 7 of Body of Basket).
For example: When you are working Round 3, you will work into the single crochet stitches from Round 1. If you are working Round 9, you will work into the single crochets of Round 7.
The single crochet we work into will be the SAME single crochet stitches that the slip stitches were worked into.
TIP: It can be very helpful to place a stitch marker in the first and last single crochet of Rounds 1 or 7 after placing your slip stitch. For example, in Round 3, place your first slip stitch and then place a stitch marker in the top of the single crochet it was just worked into. Then, once you’ve placed your last slip stitch of the round, place a stitch marker in the top of the single crochet it was just worked into. This will help you know for certain where your first and last stitch of the round is when working “2 rounds below”.
Special Stitch – Single Crochet 2 Together (sc2tog)
Sc2tog’s are used alternately to start and end rounds to ensure the Trinity Stitch works properly in the round.
To work a SC2TOG, you will: Insert hook into first indicated stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. 2 loops on hook. Insert hook into the next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. 3 loops on hook.
Finally, yarn over and pull through all 3 loops. 1 loop remains on hook. Your SC2TOG is complete!
Special Stitch – Single Crochet 3 Together (sc3tog)
Sc3tog’s create the lovely, dense texture of this crochet basket pattern.
To work a SC3TOG, you will: Insert hook into first indicated stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. 2 loops on hook. Insert hook into the next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. 3 loops on hook. Insert hook into the next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. 4 loops on hook.
Finally, yarn over and pull through all 4 loops. 1 loop remains on hook. Your SC3TOG is complete!
Special Technique – Starting in Previous Stitch
In this pattern, you will see instructions to begin sc3tog’s or sc2tog’s “starting in the previous stitch”. This means to use the same stitch where your previous stitch ended to begin your next sc3tog or sc2tog.
The previous stitch will always be the last stitch you just worked into. If our previous stitch was a single crochet, we will start our sc3tog in the SAME stitch the single crochet was placed into. If our previous stitch was a sc3tog, we will start our next sc3tog in the last stitch used by the previous sc3tog.
My Trinity Stitch Tutorial goes over how to do this. Be sure to check out the tutorial if you need visuals!

Note: “2 Rounds Below” will be Round 19 for Medium Size and Round 25 for Large Size from “Body of Basket”.
Round 2 (RS) – Ch 1, turn. 1 sc 15 (19) sts. Place 16 sc into the ch 12 space. 1 sc in each of the next 30 (38) sts. Place 16 sc into the ch 12 space. 1 sc each of the remaining 15 (19) sts. Sl st to first sc made in round to close. (92 (108))
Note: “Into the chain 12 space” means to insert your hook under the chain 12, yarn over and pull up a loop.
Round 3 (RS) – Ch 1, do not turn. 1 sl st each st around. Sl st to first sl st made in round to close. (92 (108))
